Slate is a natural stone or rock that adds a natural beauty to interior and exterior living spaces, Slate varies widely in color due to different minerals and clays found in the stone, from dark greens, blues, and black, to warm yellow and red colors. It is most commonly used as a flooring material and fireplace facings and hearths and is often distinguished by its distinct cleft texture. Slate shares certain characteristics with granite, the most important being chemical and acid resistance.
Slate provides an elegant option with low maintenance that make sense long term in both price and design goals. The wide range of colors, textures, and shapes lend themselves to both formal and relaxed settings. The bottom of the slate tile is honed so it is rather flat. The surface of slate tile is a riven, showing its natural and rough split. There could be up to 1/4" difference in the heights on the surface of a slate tile. To avoid the possibility of permanent staining the slate, tiles should be sealed with a high quality, penetrating sealer.
